Reports of large deposits of natural resources set off a race for African colonies. Out of fear of war over land claims, European nations met in Berlin, Gernamy to divide up Africa. African nations were not invited to attend this conference, leaving them with little ability to protect themselves.

In South Africa, the British segregated society, called an apartheid, which remained in place for over 100 years. Africans were unable to rule themselves, participate in voting or learn professional skills.
Belgium will claim the Congo, controlling the diamond mining. King Leopold II will privately own the Congo, and due to it's profitability, the Belgian ruler exploited the people and land.
French West Africa France will take over the west coast of Africa, controlling the gold and oil resources of the region.
Great Britain will control the Suez Canal, controlling sea trade between Europe and Asia.
