Supporting Financially Stressed Students
Intervention 2
Low-income students often struggle to afford college due to worries about debt and basic needs. Colleges are increasingly aware of this financial stress, with over 50% of undergraduates in the US facing issues like food or housing insecurity while studying. Groups at higher risk include community college, minority, LGBTQ, veteran, foster youth, and disabled students, among others. This module offers strategies to assist financially stressed students, improving their learning, sense of belonging, confidence, and retention in college. It draws from research in social psychology, educational psychology, and brain science, and can be customized to fit your students' needs and context. Let's take a look!
Zoom EtiquetteEncourage students to use video during class meetings or display a suitable virtual background.
Lowest Homework Grade Drop Policytwo of lowest homework grades dropped at the end of term
Test and Quiz Re-StartStudents may request one test or quiz restart for technical issues such as internet disruption but must promptly contact the instructor.
Make-up Quiz PolicyExcused absences include severe weather, religious holidays, illness, etc. Students must notify the instructor before the quiz deadline.
Create equitable course policies and practices that accommodate the needs of high financial stress students. What does this look like?
Provide students with the level of reasonable flexibility in their course that they would appreciate for themselves. Also avoid unintentionally exacerbating the challenges some students face when dealing with financial stress such as asking how many hours students studied each week or if they received a good night's sleep. Something else to consider is avoid requiring students to provide documentation to support reasons as to why assignments were missed or submitted late.

Creating a Wise Feedback Framing Statement
Intervention 3
Wise Feedback is an effective approach to deliver constructive comments on exams or assignments, fostering students' trust by 1) communicating feedback's intent to aid their growth, reflecting the instructor's growth mindset, and 2) addressing concerns of negative stereotyping or discrimination. A concise Wise Feedback Framing Statement can accompany key assignments, emphasizing challenging standards, and confidence in students' capabilities.Research shows Wise Feedback increases trust in impartial grading and academic engagement, narrowing outcome gaps between disadvantaged and advantaged racial groups. By using this approach, instructors aim to foster trust, engagement, and academic success among students, especially those from diverse backgrounds.
