Refining domain

Bringing greater specificity to the domain of interest

This involves:

• KNOW-PH working with the policy partners and the evidence base at a local level to refine
• NIHR working with policy partners at a national level
• NIHR highlighting any key outputs in domain and those on the horizon

Identifying the domain

A consultative phase

With policy partners (NIHR, national; KNOW-PH local)

• Process should identify the broad domain of interest
• An attempt to create a list of sub-domains of interest
• These should be defined in clear terms wherever possible
• Links to policy/strategy/planning documents desirable

Formalising connections

Having a permanent contact for the domain of interest

Every effort should be made at this stage to:

• Create solid and commited persons of connection for each domain
• NIHR to connect with national policy
• KNOW-PH to connect with local policy/practice

Problem definition

Extends the project plan with policy partners

This phase is:

• Partly dependent on the extent and nature of the NIHR evidence base
• Preferably in-person refinement and workshopping between policy partners and KNOW-PH team

Bringing topics to the fore

Through negotiation and agreement with partners

Identify what is possible within a domain.

• KNOW-PH takes responsibility for this phase for both national and local now that links have been established
• Project pen-pictures developed by KNOW-PH team

Agreeing parameters

A desk-based exercise for KNOW-PH & approval from NIHR

The team:

• Works up a project plan for submission to NIHR (using template)
• Refers to PACE group
• Leaves room for refinement
• Is signed off by NIHR
