Starting point

This stone is found in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, in front of the Casa de Correos with its famous clock tower.

The streets in Madrid are numbered from this stone so citizens and tourists can always find their way back if they get lost.

The stone has been replaced several times, including once when it had accidentally been set the wrong way round.

Kilometre zero was the point from where, in the 18th century, six roads were built, heading out of Madrid in different directions.

Madrid is roughly located in the middle of Spain. However the exact centre of the Iberian Peninsula is Cerro de los Ángeles in Getafe - 10 kilometres south of Madrid.

The coat of arms for Madrid has changed many times. Today it features a griffin, a bear and a strawberry tree with a royal crown.
