In Portugal during the Salazar era, there were many restrictions on education.
In the classrooms there was a picture of Salazar and a cross for the children to pray to.
In schools, boys were not allowed to stay with girls.
Only the richest children continued at school.
Generally, the children only studied for four years and then went to work in the fields or factories when they were about 11 years old.
After April 25, there were many improvements in education. Public schools became compulsory until the age of 18 and free until the twelfth grade. Some changes were also made to promote gender equality and, above all, a more inclusive education.
