athletes' foot
Athlete's foot is a fungal skin infection. Its scientic name is tinea pedis - from the the Latin tinea, meaning worm, and pedis, meaning foot.
what is athletes' foot?
- Athletes' foot is caused by mould-like fungi called dermatophytes.Dermatoph-ytes live on the dead tissues of your skin, hair, and nails.
what pathogen causes it?
The dermatophytes that cause athletes' foot (T. rubrum) do not normally infect animals, but can contaminate their fur.
what organisms does it affect?
Athletes' foot can be spread through contact with infected skin cells, or through contact with fungi in damp areas (for example, showers and swimming pools).
how is it transmitted?
- Itching, stinging and burning between toes or on soles of feet
- Blisters on feet that itch
- Cracking and peeling on one's feet, commonly between toes and on soles.
- Dry skin on soles or sides of one's feet
what are the symptoms?
Athletes' foot can be treated by the use of antifungal creams, sprays or powders.
