Long-term baiting is the use of rodenticides for more than 35 days. This is not done to monitor or protect the site, and should not be used to as a routine control measure. This tactic can only be used in these four specific circumstances.

Large infestations

Where there are large infestations. Particularly where the extent of the infestation was not recognised in the initial survey and phase of the baiting programme.

Bait shyness

Where the target rodents are reluctant to feed on the bait or are refusing the enter the bait box. This means there is a delay in the start time of the treatment and the treatment time is extended.

Bait resistant rodents

Where a high proportion of the target rodents are anticoagulant resistant - meaning the poison does not kill them as intended. When this was not identified during the initial phase of treatment, this will extend the treatment until the resistance is confirmed and an alternative treatment used.

Immigration

Where the rodents are immigrating from an external source that cannot be treated.
