Index

Plastic is a synthetic or semi-synthetic polymeric material.The term plastic comes from the Greek plastikos,which means "suitable for being molded or modeled"as its main characteristic is the possibility of maintaining its shape after molding. Plastic is the raw material used in the manufacture of various components such as toys,school materials,automobile parts,construction,electronics ,food packaging and other things. However, plastic has many consequences for the Earth, for example approximately 8 million tons of plastic are discarded anually in our oceans, plastic degrades into smaller particles that are ingested by ocean life. As we consume a wide variety of ocean life, such as fish, we also end up consuming the particle.

What is Plastic ?

The use of plastic:

The use of plastic in the production of consumer products is very common. Plastic is widely used due to its versatility, durability and low cost. It is used in food packaging bottles, kitchen utensils, toys and many other everyday things. However, the excessive use of plastic has caused environmental concerns, as many plastic products are discarded inappropriately, polluting the environment and harming marine life. Therefore, it is important to seek more sustainable alternatives such as the use of biodegradable materials and reducing the consumption of disposable plastic.

Types of plastic:

There are several types of plastic, each with its own characteristics and uses. Some common examples are polyethylene (used in some plastic bags), polypropylene (used in food packaging), PVC (used in pipes and coatings, PET (used in in bottles and soft drinks) and polystyrene (used in disposable cups. Each type of plastic has different properties, such as resistance, flexibility and transparency. It is important to know these types of plastic to be able to recycle them correctly and reduce the environmental impact.

Plastic does not decompose in a natural way, resulting in accumulation of waste and plastic pollution in the ocean. other than that the plastic pollution consumes natural resources and emits greenhouse gases. Burning plastic and other types of waste releases dangerous substances such as heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants (POP), and other toxic chemicals into the air and persist in ash waste residues. These chemicals have been linked to the development of asthma, endocrine disruption, and cancer.

Enviormental impact

Chemical additives are like special ingredients we put in plastic to make it work better. They can do things like make plastic flexible,stop it from catching fire easily,or give it different colors.Sometimes,these additives can cause problems.When plastic breaks down,it can release these chemicals into the air or water.This can be bad for animals,plants,and even us. Some additives in plastic have been linked to health issues like hormone problems or allergies.Plus,when these chemicals get into the environment,they can harm wildlife and ecosystems. That's why it's important to be careful with plastic and try to use less of it when we can.Choosing products with fewer additives can help keep us and our planet healthier.

Chemical Additives:

Formation process of plastic bottles

First of all, the plastic is melted and then molded in a bottle shapped mold. This process is called injection molding. Secondly, the mold is cooled down to solidify the bottle shape, after the shape is secure the bottle is removed from the mold. After this, the bottle goes through a finalizing process where it is cut , sanded and evaluated to ensure its quality.And lastly, the label is added to the bottle and packaged.

Physical and chemical properties of the plastic used:

  • physically plastic is transperent ,opact, translucent, resistant, flexible and light.
  • chemically the plastic is refered to organic polymeric materials , formed by the union of large molecular chains, known as polymers, which in turn, are made up of smaller moleculs, called monomers.

Characteristics of plastic:

Life cycle of a plastic water bottle:

  • Ecological bottles (metal bottles);
  • Metal or paper straws;
  • Cloth or paper bags;
  • Cotton swabs and toothbrushes made from recyclable materials.

After this research we concluded that plastic may be an extremely useful invention, but it also has lots of negative aspects, for example, its overproduction has become one of our biggest issues, as it is filling our dumps, homes and oceans. This is also not the only issue with plastic, as additives contained in plastic can be dangerous to us humans, causing damage to our health. But with this presentation we also concluded that there are alternatives to plastic, and that we should use these alternatives to prevent the plastic pollution from ruining our planet.
