Jenny (26F) Jenny is in her second trimester of pregnancy has been has fallen on some steps outside a restaurant with her friends. She was witnessed falling backwards and twisting her left ankle she is unable to weight bare and her ankle is visibly swollen GCS 15 no other visible injuries. She states there was no loss of consciousness and that she only has pain in her ankle. She is currently sitting on a wheelchair in the A&E waiting room, she has a friend accompanying her.

NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) Use of systemic NSAIDS should be avoided altogether during third trimester of pregnancy Serious risks of fetal renal dysfunction and constriction of the ductus arteriosus is documented within the BNF (bnf.org.uk, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs 2024).

DAVID (71M)
David is a retired but normally very active man who has booked into A&E minors with a crushing injury to his fingers. Whilst moving rockery in his garden a rock fell trapping his hand and crushing a finger. He states he has taken Paracetamol before leaving his house to try help relieve pain. This has helped to ease the pain, However David states he is still in moderate pain.

When Administering medication we need to consider the potential of an accidental overdose for example some medications such as Co-codamol contains both codeine and paracetamol as active ingriednients, Therefore administering co-codamol to a patient who has already taken paracetamol would cause an overdose of paracetamol
Katie (42F) Katie has been taken to A&E by ambulance following a fall down stairs at home. She has been diagnosed with a fractured clavicle and placed in a sling. The Dr treating wishes to prescribe pain relief before discharging her. She has a history of anorexia with a low BMI of 16.6 (weight 44KG/ height 5ft4) otherwise she has no significant health history.
