Il est librement inspiré de « La Troisième Vague », une étude expérimentale sur un régime autocratique, menée par le professeur d'histoire Ron Jones avec des élèves de première de l'école Cubberley à Palo Alto (Californie) durant la première semaine d'avril 1967.
Le parti-pris formel du film est celui du récit d'une expérience de jeu de rôle qui tourne mal : une narration en 5 jours recourant à l'ellipse un cadrage classique du chef et dugroupe aux références des années 30 en Allemagne, des lumières contratsées
