1770

British colonization of New South Wales began with the founding of a 1,030-strong penal camp (with 736 prisoners) at Port Jackson (Sydney) by Captain Arthur Phillip on January 26, 1788. The voyage from England was the longest ever made by such a large group. The early years were marked by a high mortality rate among the arrivals. These early years were dubbed "the famine years", and were mainly caused by a lack of agricultural skills, poor quality tools and low food availability.By 1788, there were between 300,000 and one million Aboriginal Australians. A British navigator James C. claimed to have observed no sign of agriculture, historians of the time argued that, under current European law, these lands were considered terra nullius or lands belonging to no one, or lands "empty of inhabitants" Governor Arthur Phillip was charged with establishing relations with the Aborigines and living in "friendship and kindness" with them, but European diseases, alcohol and colonial expansion soon had a destructive effect on the indigenous populations.Source : Wikipedia
