the life of Leonardo da vinci
Leonardo was born on 5 April 1452 in the small town of Vinci, near Florence. His surname derives from the name of the place where he was born. His father was a rich Florentine notary and his mother a simple peasant. Leonardo grew up in his mother's family, surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan countryside. As a boy he spent his time exploring woods, fields and streams. He loved observing insects, animals and birds. He studied the different types of plants and flowers, and then drew them.
At the age of 12 Leonardo went to live in Florence with his father. At that time the city was a very lively center and young people who wanted to learn the arts, literature and sciences went there. Leonardo went to school and learned to read, write and do arithmetic. He also became a good musician. His beautiful drawings attracted the attention of one of Florence's major artists, Andrea del Verrocchio. This is how Leonardo became his student. In Verrocchio's workshop, Leonardo learned how to mix different types of colors, how to make brushes and prepare canvases for paintings. He learned the fresco technique (in which the colors are spread on the still wet plaster) and the art of sculpture.
