Shrove Tuesday
PANCAKE DAY
It's a special day celebrated in English-speaking countries like the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada. In other countries, it is called 'Mardi Gras' or 'Fat Tuesday'. It’s a fun day in Britain, like carnival in other countries.
WHAT IS PANCAKE DAY?
On this day many people eat pancakes: thin, flat cakes made in a pan.
Pancake Day is the day before LENT starts. Lent is the time before EASTER and it lasts 40 days. Christian people don’t eat some of their favourite food (treats and rich food) to focus on Jesus.
On Pancake Day people use up all the fat food in the kitchen (like butter and eggs) before Lent begins and they make pancakes from these ingredients.
In some British towns there is a pancake race:people run with their pan, they toss pancakes in the air and try to catch them.Sometimes they wear silly hats or costumes too.
PANCAKE RACE
UNO DEI GIOCHI TRADIZIONALI, È LA CORSA DEI PANCAKE.
Legend says that a woman heard the church bells ringing as she was making pancakes in 1445. She didn’t want to be late so she ran to church still holding the frying pan with the pancake! Today, you can take part in the race, wearing an apron and a headcovering, while carrying a pan containing a pancake. You must toss your pancakes three times during the race. The first person to cross the finish line at the church wins the race.
