"My food doesn't serve itself, ladies..."
This is such an important matter, that one can earn Paradise or Hell because of his treatment of animals.
animals in islam
The mistreatment of animals is considered a major sin in Islam, as explained in the famous book 'The Major Sins' by Imam Muhammad ibn 'Abdul Wahhab, may Allah give him His forgiveness. Certainly, a Muslim is responsible for his treatment of animals, because an abused animal will testify against the one who abused it on the Day of Judgment. Islam forbids branding animals with hot iron and killing them in vain, as if for sport.
The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, prohibited people from catching birds, burning anthills among other things. Even when animals are sacrificed for food, Islam requires that the sacrifice be done according to established Islamic methods, which are humane and reduce suffering. As Allah's representatives on earth, human have a responsibility towards every living creature.

The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, taught Muslims to have mercy towards all of Allah's creation. Cats were very common among the people at the time of the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and he said, "They (cats) are not impure and can mingle with you." The cat is such a clean animal that, according to authentic narrations, one can perform ablution for prayer with the same water from which a cat drank.

CATS
Do they think that Allah will not punish them for that?
Certainly Allah's punishment for such acts is severe, if we take in mind the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, by Al Bukhari and Muslim about a woman who locked up a cat, refusing to feed it and did not liberate it so that it could feed itself. The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said that as punishment she would be introduced into Hell.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, a close companion of the Noble Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, who narrated more hadiths (sayings of the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) than any other companion. He was known to be very compassionate and loving to animals. Although his name was 'Abdur-Rahman', he was known as 'Abu Hurayrah' (the father of the kitten) because he had a small kitten which he fed, cared for and took with him wherever he went.

Sadly, today there is no domestic animal more abused than the dog. The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said, "The purification of a vessel that has been licked by a dog (to be used by humans) is done by washing it seven times, the first time it should be washed with earth" [Muslim]. A Muslim should not keep a dog inside his house, as the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, informed us that angels do not enter the house where there is a dog [Al Bukhari and Muslim].
dogs
Does this mean that dogs should be despised or mistreated?
Certainly not. Just because the dog cannot be kept inside the house does not mean that it should be neglected or abandoned, mistreated or killed. The usefulness of this creature of Allah is indisputable. No other animal can compete with it in its loyalty, its abilities as a guardian and its talent as a hunter.

- In fact, in the Sura entitled 'The Cave', the Qur'an reveals the story of some young men who had faith and trust in Allah, who took refuge in a cave from the persecution and violence of the disbelievers of their day. These virtuous people brought a dog with them, and the fact that Allah Mentions the dog and Counts it among them indicates that it is permissible for dogs to live among people.
- Al-lah Says (what is interpreted in English): {You would have thought they were awake, but they were asleep. We would turn them to the right and to the left, and their dog was with its forelegs stretched out at the entrance} [Qur'an 18:18].

Thus, dogs can be used as guardians and also as hunters, as the Holy Qur'an also states; for, Al-lah says (what is interpreted in English): {They ask you what is lawful [to eat]. Say: You have been permitted whatever is beneficial. You may eat what has been caught for you by the animals of prey which you have trained for hunting, as Allah has taught you. And mention the name of Allah [when you give them the order to hunt], and fear Allah; Allah is Swift in settling accounts} [Qur'an 5:4].

A narration from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, told his Companions of the virtues of saving the life of a dog by giving it water and quenching its thirst. One of the stories refers to a man who was blessed by Allah for giving water to a thirsty dog [Muslim].

Let us reflect on this and take care of our duties towards Allah's creatures, which He has placed on earth for our use and not for our abuse. When the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was asked if Allah rewards acts of charity towards animals, he, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, replied, "Yes, there is reward for acts of charity towards every living creature." We should fear Allah with regard to His creatures lest we earn His anger. We should support and love animals, knowing that Allah, Exalted is He, considers such actions performed for His sake as worthy of the reward of Paradise.
