- They contain too much material.- Key ideas fade into the background and they are not successfully communicated.- Students cannot grasp the main idea of different concepts.- Should be replaced with other reading materials when possible.

The Trouble with textbooks

Video

Reasons why textbooks aren't great

  • Textbooks are reference books, not novels.
  • Textbooks are designed to supply huge amounts of information that can be looked up when needed.
  • They introduce content and vocabulary at a blinding rate.
  • There is nothing wrong with textbooks it's just the way they are used in schools.

Extremely hard to read

Reasons why textbooks aren't great

  • In recent years publishers have tried to make textbooks more visually appealing.
  • Real-world nonfiction has changed dramatically over the years.
  • Newer textbooks end up just being overwhelming and too gimmicky.
  • These textbooks are the worst for the struggling readers.

Textbooks are badly designed

Reasons why textbooks aren't great

  • A single textbook constitutes the entire curriculum.
  • No other readings except for maybe a workbook.
  • Students are only getting one point of view.
  • A lot of schools use the same brand of textbook for every subject.

Textbooks are authoritarian

Article

  • Not possible to keep current, or keep correct
  • Smart Teachers can even make textbook errors useful.
  • You cannot always rely on a textbook that is three or four years old.

TextBooks are often inaccurate

Why Textbooks aren't great

why textbooks aren't great

  • Textbooks being made are not such a pretty picture.
  • Sales and profits trump all other concerns for textbook suppliers.
  • States including Nebraska, Texas, Minnesota, and Massachusetts have opted out of CCSS and have their own standards.
  • Textbooks being made are not such a pretty picture.

textbooks are not written for students

My Opinion

I feel that this chapter does a great job of highlighting why textbooks shouldn't be used all the time. While textbooks can be useful every once in awhile, I feel that we need to integrate other engaging topics for our students and give them readings from different views and opinions.

No problem! 90% of the information we assimilate is received through sight and, what’s more, we retain 42% more information when the content moves.

  • Generate experiences with your content.
  • It’s got the Wow effect. Very Wow.
  • Make sure your audience remembers the message.

Textbooks

For many teachers, the content-area textbook is a treasured asset. On the other hand, the textbook used in your classes may be less of a choice and more of an imposition.
