Typical Middle school lesson plan:

• Review and revise rules for classroom discussions
• Teacher reads aloud "The treasure of Lemon Brown"
• In small groups students discuss what makes this a "good story"
• Whole-group discussion on elements of literature
• Students Independently reread "The Treasure of Lemon Brown" using note-taking strategies to cite text evidence
• Use notes to participate in a Socratic seminar

- They contain too much material. - Key ideas fade into the background and they are not successfully communicated. - Students cannot grasp the main idea of different concepts. - Should be replaced with other reading materials when possible.

• There is nothing wrong with textbooks it's just the way they are used in schools.

• Newer textbooks end up just being overwhelming and too gimmicky.

My opinion

I feel that this chapter does a great job of highlighting why textbooks shouldn't be used all the time. While textbooks can be useful every once in awhile, I feel that we need to integrate other engaging topics for our students and give them readings from different views and opinions.
