The gender of a baby can be determined at about 3 months. The infant's sex chromosomes determine if they will be either a boy or a girl. Chromosomes contain genetic information from each parent.

Homozygous and Heterozygous Genes

An infant's phenotype is determined by the genes they inherit from their parents. An infant can receive the same version of a gene from our mom and dad meaning it is homozygous. An infant who receives two different versions of the genes, it is heterozygous.

There are 3 periods of prenatal development: germinal period, embryonic period, and fetal period.Germinal Period: Starts at conception. Once a single sperm has entered the wall of the egg, the head of the sperm containing all of the genetic information goes to the nuclues of the egg, creating a new cell. (Lasts about 14 days).Embryonic Period: Begins once the multi-cellular organism is implanted in the uetrine wall.Lasts from the 3rd-8th week after conception, the embryo starts to take a more human apperance at the end of this stage.Fetal Period: Lasts from the 9th week until birth. The embryo, now referred to as a fetus are developing their major structures such as the digestive system and excretory system, the fetus will enter the age of viability and will continue to grow until birth.
