Definitions

These are those words that are bolded or italicized throughout the policy and must be reviewed and applied to properly understand the policy terms and conditions. The Definitions section provides descriptions of various words, terms, and phrases that are used within the policy document and are important to understanding what is covered. If you look at the insuring agreement example, there were several bolded words, for which you would look to the definition section to understand what the carrier means. Here are some of those definitions:

Sometimes, within a definition will be another bold word that you will need to refer to its definition. For example, in the definition of Loss, pollution condition is bolded and would need to be referred to understand what pollution conditions would be covered under the policy form (subject to amendment by exclusion or endorsement).
