What Meals May You Need To Meet Your Nutrional Goal?

Nutrients are healthy materials in food. Nutrients help the body in many ways. Some help to fight infection, create energy, or build strong bones or muscles. Some of the most common and important types of nutrients are protein; carbohydrates and fiber; fat, cholesterol, and sodium; and vitamins and minerals.

Protein is a nutrient that many living organisms need to grow. It serves as a kind of building block that adds size and strength to the muscles and other parts of the body. It also performs many other tasks throughout the body, such as building cells, moving needed oxygen, and combating infection. Traditionally, many people received protein from animal products such as meat, poultry, fish, and eggs. However, foods like beans and nuts also contain a great deal of protein.

Carbohydrates, or “carbs,” are another essential nutrient. They help to deliver energy to the body, much like fuel to an engine. Carbs also combine with other nutrients to build and repair parts of the body. Foods with a large amount of carbs include cereal, rice, bread, potatoes, and pasta. Scientists have identified several kinds of carbs, including sugar, starches, and fiber. Sugar is the least healthy of the carbs, and many people eat far too much of it. People should reach for starches and fiber instead. Fiber is one of the most important of the carbs because it cleans the inside of the body. Fiber can help wastes move through the body. Some foods that contain this kind of fiber include nuts, seeds, lentils, and whole grains.

How Does Staying Healthy Stop Me From Becoming Obese? Slide 2

Over many years of study, medical researchers have determined that unhealthy diets can lead to obesity. Obesity is a medical condition characterized by a large amount of body fat. Obesity is sometimes caused to poor dietary choices, including diets that are high in calories, fat, and sugar. To lose weight, doctors recommend avoiding high-calorie foods and eating more fresh foods, including vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

Obesity can be the result of several factors. Some of these are out of a person’s control. For example, obesity can be caused by genetics—the biological qualities inherited from parents—or hormones. Hormones are natural chemicals in the blood. However, a high-calorie diet combined with limited activity can also contribute to obesity. Calories come from the food people eat. The body uses some of these calories as energy to power physical activity. Unused calories are stored as fat. Sometimes people consume more calories than they expend through exercise. This is how food can contribute to weight gain and, in extreme cases, obesity.

Calories are not the only dietary factor that can lead to obesity. Other factors to consider are fats and sugar. In large amounts, these can damage people’s overall health and cause them to gain weight. Foods that contain unhealthy amounts of calories, fat, and sugar include soda, processed meats, mayonnaise, salad dressing, whole milk, ice cream, butter or margarine, and fried foods.

How does a nutrious meal improve my overall wellness?

We know that an apple a day doesn't necessarily keep the doctor away and that a walk around the block is not enough to keep fit. Of course, an apple and a short walk are a great start, but there is much more to consider in pursuing good health. It seems that every day Americans are inundated with messages about the importance of nutrition and exercise and how to achieve the best health possible. The success of these communications efforts is unmistakable. Studies show that in recent years more Americans have been exercising regularly and improving their diets. And both cholesterol levels and fat consumption are down.

During the '80s, Americans were obsessed with health and fitness. But statistics show that in the '90s, their zeal is not so fervent. Why? Perhaps they are reconsidering the benefits of denying themselves basic pleasures when life is so short and the rewards are not guaranteed. Americans are admitting interest once again in those foods that were forbidden in the '80s and finding excuses not to exercise to the degree they did during those years. Although more restaurants offer low-fat versions of traditional dishes and other healthy choices, many Americans prefer to indulge in their old fatty favorites. However, attitude alone cannot be fingered as a barrier to achieving good health. American consumers have been victims of information overload and inconsistent messages which have caused confusion. For example, the changing opinions regarding butter and margarine contribute to consumer misunderstanding, as does the changing view of oat bran's role in lowering cholesterol levels. And what about the potential benefits of a daily glass of wine? And s cow's milk good for children or not? It is no surprise that Americans are baffled by the mixed signals they receive.

The American College of Sports Medicine and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for example, recently introduced Exercise Lite, a program that encourages Americans to incorporate 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity into their daily routine, beginning with just a few minutes a day, if necessary. The nutrition professional community also is trying to spread the message of moderation as opposed to total sacrifice and abstinence.
