Il carbone ha origine dalla decomposizione del legno di antichissime foreste,poi sommerse dalle acque.La cellulosa del legno perde l'idrogeno e l'ossigeno e rimane solo il CARBONIO.
Principali zone di estrazione nel mondo:

USA, Russia, Cina, Australia, India, Germania, Kazakistan, Sudafrica, Indonesia.

Il CARBONE, si può classificare in 4 tipi diversi: - TORBE - LIGNITI

IL CARBONE

- LITANTRACI - ANTRACITI
Impieghi: oggi il carbone è utilizzato principalmente nelle centrali termoelettriche e nell'industria chimica.
L'estrazione: possiamo avere miniere a cielo aperto o miniere vere e proprie sotteranee.
Dai litantraci più grassi si ottiene anche il COKE METALLURGICO, un carbone artificiale compatto e resistente.
