Introduction

This report includes the latest family feedback received over the last 6 months and themes identified. There are also updates from different service areas focusing on how family feedback has been used to shape and develop the support and services we offer children, young people and their families.

This report is a 6-month review of the June 2023 Family feedback report. The aim of this report is to review the actions identified in the June 2023 report and to set out the next steps in ensuring that the feedback received form children, young people and their families continues to be listened to and incorporated into service development.

milestones

A key development since the June 2023 report is that children and young people are helping to review the ‘you said, we did’ actions as ‘Young experts’ which is a name the young people chose for themselves.

The Family Feedback Report June 2023 identified four areas of focus, which are reviewed in this report. The areas are:

Introduction

  • 3. Strengthen Multi-agency partnerships
  • 4. Developing family feedback
  • 1. Increasing transparency and managing expectations
  • 2. Sharing learning

Updates on areas of focus from June 2023 report

You said that child Protection procedures and conferences can feel ‘intimidating’, and we want to understand more about how it works. We did: The CP animation, created in June 2023 has continued to be shared with children and young people with a child protection plan. Feedback from young experts during the October 2023 activity day was that they were feeling confident with the professionals in their lives.

Increasing transparency and managing expectations was a key theme from the June 2023 Family Feedback report, with some young people reporting that they did not understand the roles of different professionals. Additional feedback has been that young people are less likely to want to participate in their meetings if they don’t know the professionals attending, or if they are not clear about their roles.

The impact of the animation being shared with children is that there has been an increase of children participating in their child protection conferences of 52%.

1. Increasing transparency and managing expectations

You Said: Parents told us that they were not always clear about different professional roles and responsibilities. Children also said that there can be a lot of professionals involved with supporting their family and they are sometimes confused about who does what. We did: A practice tool entitled the ‘Who’s who, Roles and Responsibilities index’ has been co-produced with children and young people and shared with practitioners. The tool includes direct work tools to map the professional network supporting a family. The tools are templates which can be edited as the young experts told us that it would be good for young people to be able to choose the background images. Some young experts suggested that young people may want to use their own artwork or photography for the background images.

Roles and Responsibilities Index:

The Index also includes a glossary of professional roles and responsibilities. Feedback from young experts and also parents is that eg this glossary is helpful as it helps breaks down exactly the purpose of each professional and further details how they may intertwine. Previous feedback from parents set out in the June 2023 identified the need to better manage parent’s expectations of our services and for professional roles to be clearly defined. The index therefore provides the opportunity for professional roles and responsibilities to be clarified with parents alongside this being clearly set out in the family change plan. To support the workforce, PALMs offered a workshop and one to one practice development sessions focusing on child centred planning.
