The Human Population
QUESTION 1 of 5
How have the size and growth of the human population changed in the last 200 years?
The world population was around 1 billion in the year 1800 and is now, at around 8 billion, 8 times larger. The major cause for the dramatic increase of the human population over the past 200 years is a decline in the mortality rate because of better medical and healthcare services and improved sanitation.

QUESTION 2 of 5
What are the four properties that scientists use to predict population sizes?
Birth rate, death rate, emigration, and immigration
If the death rate decreases there is an increase in population. The death rate is inversely proportional to the death rate. High death rate can be the result of malnutrition, hunger, starvation, lack of medical facilities and sanitary facilities.
Birth Rate has a positive influence on population growth. If the birth rate increases, the size of the population also increases. It depends on the rate of childbirth, the age where the marriage happens, and social customs and beliefs. Birth rate is directly proportional to population size.

Emigration is the migration of people from their own place to another country or region. It helps to decrease the population size of ones country, while increasing the size of the population being traveled to.
Immigration refers to the foreign people who are permanently residing in ones country. When immigration occurs, this can cause an increase in population, not only due to the newly immigrated people, but also these individuals tend to aid in increasing the birth rate.
QUESTION 3 of 5
What are the four stages of demographic transition?
1. Pre-Industrial: High birth and death rates lead to slow population growth.2. Transitional: The death rate falls, but the birth rate remains high, leading to faster population growth.3. Industrial: The birth rate starts to fall, so population growth starts to slow.4. Post-Industrial:The birth rate reaches the same low level as the death rate, so population growth slows to zero.
Pre-industrial, transitional, industrial, and post-industrial.

QUESTION 4 of 5
Three problems caused by population growth:
According to 97% of the scientific community, human activities are changing global temperatures. If more is not done to reduce individual carbon footprints on a wide scale, larger populations may speed these changes up.
As the difference between demand and supply continues to expand due to overpopulation, it raises the prices of various essential commodities, including food, shelter, and healthcare. This means that people have to pay more to survive and feed their families.
Roughly 1% of the world’s water is fresh and accessible. Overpopulation is a major issue that creates immense pressure on the world’s freshwater supplies.

QUESTION 5 of 5
Population Growth Developed vs Less Developed Countries
Around 240 babies are born each minute in less developed countries, compared to 25 per minute in more developed countries.

population growth in the next 50 years
The world population is projected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030, and to increase further to 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion by 2100
