HISTORY

Islam is the largest religion in Turkey. More than 99% of the population is Muslim, Christianity (Oriental Orthodoxy, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Apostolic) and Judaism are the other religions in practice, but the non-Muslim population declined in the early 2000s. Turkey has several historical mosques, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (also known as the blue mosque) in Istanbul, the Süleymaniye Mosque, and Hagia Sofia (now a museum, formerly a mosque and before that a church) both also in Istanbul.
