Goals
In this presentation, we are going to be talking about the history of women's football and the ambition we have and hope for, to increase the number of women and girls involved in the game.In recent years, we have seen a huge increase in popularity and involvement in women's football. We think that the increase in women's football has a big impact on many things , such as inspiring younger girls.Because of this, we will be highlighting the importance of recognising women's sports. We think it is a great opportunity to learn more about this to celebrate and support the progress and achievements of the strong women in sports.

Introduction
The history of women's football
01
Early years. Mid 20th Century
Despite the increase in the game over the years, on 5 December 1921, after WW!, the FA announced a ban on women's football and claimed that "the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged". This ban also was put place in other countries, but the sport continued to grow in France and Italy. However, during the 1960s, more women started to campaign for their rights, which later liften the ban in 1971, where women were set to play their first pre-cursor to the Women's FA cup
+ INFO
The first female football match occurred on the 7th of May, 1881, where England supposedly played Scotland. These two teams played many matches, however, a few were cancelled due to pitch invasions.During this time, women's football became increasingly popular, which led to many local women's football teams being formed, where they would compete against other clubsHowever, the first recorded women's football match was carried out on 23rd March 1895. This match had a significant milestone in women's football as over 10,000 people paid to watch the match. This allowed the women game to reach recognition from many people and many campaigns.

Growth and recognition
growth and recognition of Women's football
The game was gaining media attention by the day and more importantly, more participants. By 2002 in England, it had become the top participation team sport for women and girls. This FA target was achieved three years ahead of target. In the same year, Lily Parr of Dick, Kerr Ladies became the first woman inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame. This was in part the game acknowledging its roots, but also building its future foundations.Other ways that increased the growth in womens football was because of the media. This was by streaming the women's games on TV, hosting national games in bug stadiums or just having many spectators who share their experiences, which encourage people to also support and take part.
+ INFO
The growth and recognition of women’s football has been a long journey. After the bans were lifted, leagues were formed globally.
- The first UEFA European Women’s Championship was held in 1984.
- The first Womens World Cup was held in 1991.
- As the game has grown, the level of competition and amount of talent has grown with it
The growth and recognition of the sport has given older female plaers the opportunity to becomme role models for the younger generation of female footballers. They use their struggles to inspire and encourage younger players to pursue their dreams and passions for the sport. It allows young athletes to invision their own potential and feel empowered to achieve their goals in football
+ INFO
Because of the efforts put in to make football more recognised, over the years, many more women have made it to play proffessionally. due to increased media coverage, more women's teams, there has been great success from women in the game. these factors have contributed to the popularity of the game, and has led to a positive change.Because of this impact, many organisations have been formed to support the younger generation of young girls getting involved in football.

Barriers to participation
04
Although barriers are gradually being broke, there are still some whichapply to women and girls in football. Some examples are:
FIFA, UEFA, and football governing bodies are helping to break these barriers down through increased investments, better facilities, and more media coverage. There is also an increased initiative by the FA to challenge stereotypes and promote inclusivity in football.
+ INFO
- Lack of access. (girls have 1,3 MILLION fewer opportunities to play secondary school sports than boys.
- Safety and transport issues.
- Social stigma.
- Money.
- Lack of Role Models.
- Lack of access to facilities.
- Lack of media coverage and visibilities
Coming from an ethnic background, women playing football was looked down upon. My parents tried to be supportive, despite their views they were bought up around, however, my grandparents did not agree with me playing football, which put me off the sport at times.
Historical views
Being a woman AND a person of colour, my football journey has not always been easy. I grew up playing football in a majority white area, and often, I would hear parents and other spectators screaming racist remarks from the sidelines, and nothing was done about it. I often heard comments made about my hair and it upset me a lot.
Racism
When i was younger, i didn't live around many grassroots football clubs or local sessions, so it was hard to access football despite my love for the sport. My mum did not drive and my dad was working till late, so I had no way of getting there.
Transportation
Growing up, being involved in football has always been a financial struggle for me and my family. There were times where I was'nt able to join sessions or be involved in tournaments becuase of the fee. I also remember, there was a time where i could not afford kit or boots because we did't have enough money.

we have spoken to a few women involved in grassroots football to share their struggles in the game and the barriers they have faced.
Real Life Barriers faced by women in football
Efforts to increase participation
05
when players receive the right support, it motivates them to participate.
Improve spectatorship and support.
This will tackle the negative views that people may have, and will allow them to be more positive about women's football
Campaigns to raise awareness and change perception
This will provide them with new, fun opportunities, allowing them to stay invovlved
Creating more grassroots programmes so young girls can get involved
makes accessing football more affordable, and also encourges girls to pursue their passion for football
Scholarships for female players
provides young girls with opportunities to learn and football play in school, and gets them involved
Expansion of football in school programmes
Allows new players to feel more comfortable
Create inclusive and welcoming environments within football clubs
Efforts to increase participation:
Future goals and ideas
06
Football festivals with appearances from top female players to celebrate the women in football – including games, music, workshops.
Introduce more partnerships where semi-pro or professional teams within countys collaborate with schools/colleges to provide more opportunities for girls to play.
Conduct awareness compaigns in schools to break down stereotypes and promote inclusivity. Also make football compulsory in schools so everyone can atleast TRY it, and girls have the opportunity to play, without feeling left out.
More global exchange programmes which allow girls to travel and play football in different countries, and will also allow them to meet many more female players, who they may share similar experiences with
Ideas:
to encourage more W+G's who currently don't feel like they belong in football
these initiatives can help make football a more accessible and encouraging for female players. It ensures their safety and makes them feel like they have a sense of belonging, participating in the sport
