Competency-Based Learning

Competency-based learning focuses on students' abilities to demonstrate the learning outcomes/goals and reflects on the process of learning. Competency-based learning highlights observable skills, once those skills are proven the student will continue to progess in learning. Competency-based learning allows students to learn at their own pace and depth resulting in a flexible curriculum.

Standards-Based Grading

According Beachboard & Kersey (2022)

Standards-based grading (SBG) provides clear communication that specifies specific areas of success and mastery in learning concepts in addition to indicating areas that need more attention. This comunication of growth and success on student progress provides families a clear path to advance in their studies. SBG is shown to be more fair and accurate for students.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of creating and maintaining moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and environment. It is a nurturing practice that allows individuals to reflect on their thoughts and feelings without the use of judgement. Mindfulness is a positive activitiy that promotes individuals to live in the present at in any given moment.

Metacognition

Metacognition is a way to evaluate how an individual thinks and learns. Teachers utilize metacognition to support students in developing an understanding of their strengths in learning. When students are self-aware of their strengths to support their learning, their understanding, memory, and independence skills increase.

The primacy effect refers to the start of a learning segment where students are able to remember most of the information being presented. The recency effect is shorter than the primacy effect but refers to the end of the lesson where students are able to learn more information before ending the learning segment. In a classroom, this mean thats the important information or should be taught within the first portion of a lesson, should allow down time in the middle, and end with a review during recency.

Project based learning uses a project as the unit to present information and concepts. Projects completed are driven by student interest and choice while being highly dependent on collaboration between students. Problem-solving allows individuals to manage emotions, think creatively, and be independent leaners. Individuals are constantly faced with decisions to make and obstacles to overcome which requires critical thinking. Students who are problem solvers exhibit a growth mindset and understand that they are able to overcome challenges.

Differentiation

According to McCarthy (2023)

Differentiation is used to challenge each student in the classroom including students who are ahead or behind of their peers. The goal behind differentiation in the classroom is to ensure that all students are building knowledge and being engaged through methods that target their specific learning ability. Differentiation in the classroom should not limit critical thinking opportunties for students who are struggling and should continue to challenge students by empowering them to do work they find difficult or challenging.

Personalized Learning

Personalized learning is intended to customize the learning experience for students based on their abilities, preferences, and experiences. Not only does personalized learning assist with academic achievement but also in engagment throughout learning opportunities. Personalized learning helps measure what a student already knows and the most effective learning process when moving forward in learning.

Inclusion

According to Tavangar (2017)

Creating an inclusive environment allows students to feel emotionally safe. Students within an inclusive environment are assured they will not experience embarrassment, rejection, or be given punitive punishment. In order for educators to create a safe and inclusive environment, the experiences, backgrounds, and abilities of all students needs to be celebrated.

Some school districts utilize personalized learning as a method to nurture a student's social, emotional, and physical growth and development to prepare them as life-long resilient learners.

Personalized learning can be created through the use of technology including learning platforms that adjust to a student's ability/skill level.

Build safety and inclusion in schools by teaching students on empathy and engaging students to listen and value the stories and perspectives of their peers.

Allowing time for students to share their experiences helps in learning, healing, and building unity.

When students are challenged, allow time for them to learn from their experiences.

Help students become effective problem solvers by modeling how to think through challenges and show students the importance of learning from mistakes.
