And its Stages
Substitution
Substitution
In this stage, technology is used as a direct substitute for a traditional tool without significant change in the task. For example, using a word processor instead of writing by hand.
Augmentation
Technology in this stage provides functional improvements over traditional tools. It adds some enhancements to the task, making it more efficient or effective. An example could be using a spell checker in a word processor, which improves the quality of written work compared to handwritten text.
Modification
At this stage, technology allows for significant task redesign. Tasks are redesigned to leverage the capabilities of technology in ways that were not possible with traditional tools. For instance, students collaboratively editing a document in real-time using Google Docs, allowing for seamless collaboration and immediate feedback.
Redefinition
This stage involves technology enabling tasks that were previously inconceivable without it. It brings about a complete transformation of the learning experience. An example could be students using virtual reality simulations to explore historical events, providing immersive and interactive learning experiences that go beyond what traditional methods can offer.
how can you move ESL instructional activities to higher SAMR levels for increased effectiveness?
Augmentation to Modification:
Moving ESL instructional activities to higher SAMR levels involves leveraging technology to transform and enhance the learning experience. For Example:Instead of simply providing a digital worksheet for vocabulary practice, use online collaborative tools like Google Docs or Padlet where students can work together in real-time to create and share vocabulary lists. This not only enhances collaboration but also allows for immediate feedback.

Flash Cards
Substitution to Redefinition:
Instead of using traditional flashcards for vocabulary practice, have students create digital flashcards using apps like Quizlet or Anki. Then, take it a step further by incorporating spaced repetition algorithms and gamification elements to personalize the learning experience and promote long-term retention of vocabulary.
