Cassio Dione, storico romano del II secolo, ha espresso diverse critiche nei confronti di Augusto nelle sue opere storiografiche, in particolare nella "Storia romana". Alcune delle principali critiche includono il suo giudizio sugli aspetti autoritari del governo di Augusto, sostenendo che quest'ultimo avesse instaurato un regime che si avvicinava più a una monarchia che a una repubblica.
