Cassio Dione, storico romano del II secolo, ha espresso diverse critiche nei confronti di Augusto nelle sue opere storiografiche, in particolare nella "Storia romana". Alcune delle principali critiche includono il suo giudizio sugli aspetti autoritari del governo di Augusto, sostenendo che quest'ultimo avesse instaurato un regime che si avvicinava più a una monarchia che a una repubblica. Ovidio, il celebre poeta romano, ha espresso critiche nei confronti di Augusto nel suo lavoro più noto, l'"Ars Amatoria" ("L'Arte di Amare"). Dopo aver elogiato Giulio Cesare e la sua discendenza, Ovidio sembra aver perso il favore di Augusto e si presume che ciò sia collegato a motivi personali o a comportamenti immorali attribuiti a Ovidio. L'esilio di Ovidio a Tomi, sul Mar Nero, è spesso considerato come una punizione imposta da Augusto, sebbene i dettagli esatti siano ancora oggetto di dibattito. Pertanto, le critiche di Ovidio potrebbero essere più sottolineate dalla sua situazione personale rispetto a un dissenso politico diretto.

Uno dei principali congiurati contro Giulio Cesare, Bruto considerava Augusto un tiranno e un usurpatore della Repubblica. Nelle sue lettere, lo descrive come un uomo ambizioso e senza scrupoli, bramoso di potere assoluto.

Storico romano del I secolo d.C., Velleio Patercolo pur riconoscendo le abilità militari e politiche di Augusto, ne critica l'ascesa al potere e la sua gestione dell'impero. Lo accusa di aver instaurato un regime autocratico e di aver corrotto la moralità romana.

Storico romano del I-II secolo d.C., Tacito offre un ritratto complesso e sfumato di Augusto. Negli Annali, pur lodandone alcune qualità, ne critica l'operato come imperatore, sottolineando la sua crudeltà, la sua sete di potere e la sua ipocrisia.

Scrittore e filosofo italiano del XVI secolo, Machiavelli nel suo "Discorso sopra la prima Deca di Tito Livio" offre un'analisi politica del principato di Augusto. Lo considera un abile uomo di stato, capace di conquistare e mantenere il potere, ma ne critica anche la crudeltà e la slealtà.
