The fashion of 1940

Summary

The shorter skirts, with thin or fringed straps, and the popularization of long trousers, which were more practical and versatile to wear, were some of the highlights of fashion in the 1940s. Dresses that looked like a skirt with a coat also became popular. Thin socks disappeared due to a shortage of raw materials. The sockets socks with bare legs went into place. The false painting on the legs, which simulated the sewing of socks, was a trick widely used by women at that time.

Skirts in 1940

1940s skirts were simple styles. War rationing and restrictions in 1941-44 put a ban on the frills and ruffles popular on 1930s skirts. To save on fabric, hemlines rose to just below the knee. Other WW2 restrictions were that hems could be no more than 2 inches wide

Dresses in 1940

The classic shirtwaist style, which buttoned down to the waist and skirt hem, was a favourite choice for 1940s dresses. Pencil dresses, wrap top or skirt dresses, peplum dresses, puff sleeve dresses, and peasant dresses were all available. Wide shoulders, a thin hourglass waist, and a flared A-line skirt were features shared by almost all 1940s gowns.

Coats in 1940

The famous styles of 1940s coats include the shorter box coat, trench coats, and long overcoats that reached the knees. Wearing checkered shirt jackets and hip-length utility coats was the norm for labourers on farms and ranches. Blazers and short leather coats were popular in the city.

Trousers in 1940

In the 1940s, lighter materials such as cotton, flannel, and wool were used to make trousers. The most common patterns on these trousers were plaid and pinstripe, however they were also occasionally made in grey, brown and beige. Double pleats, flat fronts and high waists were all hallmarks of 1940s trousers.

Women's hair 1940

Many women wore short, often shackled, and permanently stylized hair. Soft, elegant waves were popular for more formal events, inspired by Hollywood glamour. Women often wore headscarves or hats to complement their hairstyles.

Men's hair 1940

Short and neat hairstyles were common among men, often a hairy back with gel. Some men adopted topets, styles that involved longer hair on the top of their heads. Due to World War II, many men wore short, practical haircuts, known as military cuts.

Women's makeup

Makeup in the 1940s emphasised a natural appearance. Women generally preferred a base that provided smooth and impeccable skin but did not look too heavy. Lips were important; lips of vibrant colours were popular. Red and berry shades were especially common. The shape of the lips was often delineated as more pronounced. Thin, arched eyebrows were popular. Many women used pencils to emphasise the shape of their eyebrows. The eyes were often accentuated with a delineator. Eye shadows in neutral tones were common, and the use of wigs to lengthen the eyelids was popular. Face apples were often highlighted with a touch of blush to give a healthy look.
