Big-picture: Everything from inside to outside the classroom
- educational equity
- the operations of schools
- history of educational reform in the US
Focused on inside the classroom:
- Instruction – teaching models
- Planning lessons and units (curriculum)
- Assessing student work (pre- formative and summative)
- The “grammar of schooling,” generally accepted understandings of what a school should be, “is a product of history” (Tyack & Cuban, 1997, p. 86).
- Changing schooling in the U.S. is difficult due to “unexamined institutional habits and widespread cultural beliefs about what constitutes a ‘real school’” (p. 88).
Learning how to best implement the classroom-instruction assessment cycle, where teachers “help students develop awareness of learning goals, track their progress…seek and use feedback…and appraise their success” (Tomlinson and Moon, 2013, p. 64).
Translanguaging
EDIS 5422 and 7890 connections:
• Encourages the fluid movement between languages in multilingual students (Najarro, 2023) • A developing more translanguaging practices and advocating for its expansion in my school a major near-term goal •I plan to design an innovation related to translanguaging for EDIS 7890
Developing a critical mindset:
Such as how to critique a unit or lesson and how to evaluate an innovative idea.
- Is an activity actually good learning, or is it a “Grecian Urn”?
- “Does it consume far more of a student’s time than is reasonable in relation to its academic impact?” (Gonzalez, 2016).
- Is an innovation actually solving a problem, or is it just change for its own sake?
