Olfactory (Bowman’s) glands produce mucus.

Gaseous molecules of the substance being smelled are vacuumed up into the sinuses and dissolve in mucus, where they are received by hairs sticking out from olfactory dendrites.

Olfactory receptors are replaced every month or so by the basal cells, making an exception to the “no new neurons” rule.

Odorant molecules attach to specific types of receptor for a particular scent. There are hundreds of types of receptors.

Sensory nerve axons travel up through the olfactory epithelium, through the ethmoid bone, and into the olfactory bulb.
