Do Now:

It doesn’t take long for the Lumberjane Scouts in Roanoke cabin to learn that Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types is not like other summer camps. In this passage, the titular Lumberjanes—Jo, Mal, April, Molly, and Ripley—earn their first merit badge, the Up All Night badge. All it takes is breaking curfew, chasing a magic bearwoman into the woods in the middle of the night, and fighting a skulk of three-eyed foxes. First launched in 2014, Lumberjanes is an ongoing comic series published by Boom! Studios.*Watch StudySync Video

Vocabulary

  • This graphic novel takes place at an all-girls summer camp whose campers are called Lumberjane Scouts.
  • Each page should be read from top to bottom and from left to right.
  • Vocabulary
    • One character refers to famous women when expressing confusion or surprise: “What in the Joan Jett?” and “Oh my Bessie Coleman!”
    • Joan Jett is a pioneer of punk rock music, and Bessie Coleman was the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license.
  • Lumberjanes is part of a growing genre of fiction series that are shifting away from the trope of girls portrayed as either princesses or damsels in distress to narratives that embrace strong, empowered female characters. The Lumberjanes series focuses on a diverse group of girls that are celebrated for their capabilities rather than their appearances or relationships with men.

Lesson Details

  • The series creators wanted to focus on several key messages including, but not limited to, the importance of
    • strong female friendships;
    • learning in all subject areas, including math and science;
    • understanding others and celebrating their unique talents and qualities;
    • grit and determination to achieve goals.
  • The series has been touted by feminist authors and critics who believe that young girls need to be given opportunities to read about strong girls who embrace life’s experiences while collaborating with other strong girls to find solutions to the problems they encounter.

Lesson Details

The Lumberjanes are scattered in the woods trying to obtain their Up All Night badges when they are ambushed by magical three-eyed foxes. The girls fight them and Ripley kills one by punching it in its third eye. The remaining foxes use their eyes to beam a message into the sky: “beware the kitten holy.” Psyched by their victory, the girls fail to sneak quietly back into their cabin. Their counselor, Jen, immediately marches them to see Rosie, the head of the camp. The girls have broken eight camp rules and are in serious trouble. At first, Rosie seems upset, but after she hears about the magic foxes, she believes everything the girls tell her. In turn, she tells them they’re going to see a lot of weird stuff this summer. They shouldn’t worry though, because they’re scouts and they’re made of tough stuff. Rosie feels the girls have definitely earned their Up All Night badges.
