A public café, roof terrace, garden and outside benches offer more opportunities to get together and share expertise. The outpatient department for the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) and shared UCL and UCLH MRI suite puts researchers, clinicians and patients under one roof for the first time. This builds on our collaborative approach at Queen Square House, where scientists work side by side with NHNN’s inpatient wards, day care, operating theatres and intensive care.

The issue will then be sent to a designated individual, typically the laboratory or core facility manager, to rectify. Users will be able to track the progress of their fault via the software.

Researchers can report equipment faults, via a technical fault tracker. This can either be accessed directly in the software or via the mobile app, by scanning the QR code attached to the equipment.

Researchers create an Infinity X account using single-sign-on (with their UCL credentials), which is verified by the departmental administrator.

WhatWe have a biological decontamination service on site for the routine sterilisation of cellular laboratory spaces and scientific equipment. A cyclical and scheduled programme of vaporised hydrogen peroxide (VHP) fumigation will focus on contamination prevention but will also be reactive should random contamination events occur. This service will use portable VHP generators for cellular spaces requiring a semi-sterile environment, such as tissue culture, molecular biology and microbiology laboratories. It will also be possible to sterilise scientific equipment using a large pass-through VHP chamber located on level B2. The service will also be available on request for other laboratory areas, depending upon their suitability for fumigation.

Equipment sterilisation using the VHP chamber can be booked individually using a service request form.

The service will be flexible to allow for any urgent requirements and will be bookable upon request.

On specified dates, laboratories will be decontaminated using portable VHP generators that are programmed for VHP release, subsequent aeration and then tested for cycle effectiveness using biological and chemical indicators.

An annual programme of VHP sterilisation will be available to all staff and students to allow sufficient forward planning to vacate areas planned for fumigation.

Provides a service aimed at contamination prevention rather than being reactionary. The use of VHP is a more rapid and convenient method of fumigation than alternative methods, is less sensitive to temperature variation and is significantly less hazardous to human health. The service can be deployed rapidly thus reducing downtime associated with contamination events. Service costs are significantly cheaper than employing a third-party decontamination provider.

Reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption. The Nordic ULT freezer system is a more energy efficient option compared to traditional ULT freezers (low-energy models) and onsite liquid nitrogen generation will result in highly efficient sample storage dewars, reducing overall consumption and eliminating the need for diesel truck deliveries Maximum storage for minimum footprint: the Nordic ULT freezer system provides approximately 70% more storage, per unit footprint, than traditional ULT freezers and there is enough capacity to future-proof cryogenic storage requirements for the foreseeable future Centrally-managed facilities include telemetry monitoring systems and extensive monitoring and alarm reporting functions to ensure safe sample storage Consolidated gas monitoring requirements and emergency air evacuation systems to ensure everyone’s safety

ABOUT THE CENTRE

Our centralised cryogenic storage facility will provide vapour-phase liquid nitrogen storage for the cryopreservation of biological materials. We have six large-capacity cryogenic dewars, each with a maximum storage capacity of 92,300 samples (a total vapour-phase storage capacity of approx 553,800 samples). We have three liquid nitrogen generators, with system telemetry, liquid nitrogen level control, flow monitoring and autorefill functionality. They’ll also provide enough product to support lab floor liquid nitrogen needs, with contracts in place for manual refilling if needed. The facility will also have gas monitoring systems and emergency air evacuation technologies to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for everyone. There will be a separate sample reception area for sample registration, barcoding, tracking and to deal with all sample requests.

Our Nordic freezer bank is a bespoke ULT freezer system comprised of large-capacity, modular storage units that are supported by a centralised industrial refrigeration plant. The plant operates with 100% redundancy using approximately 40% less energy than traditional standalone freezers and has a 24/7 telemetry, early-warning monitoring system, with pre-alarms for added assurance. The facility will be suitable for medium-term freezer storage and provide over 60,000 litres of storage capacity (equivalent to 81 x 740 litre freezers). 30% of this will be used for sample storage in a dedicated and centrally-managed biorepository, with space for several million samples, with the rest available for lab medium-term storage needs. Short-term storage will be provided with standalone shared ULT freezers on lab floors. Long-term storage can be arranged off site, at an extra cost.

When the weekly shipments arrive, the Lab Manager responsible will re-stock the supply centre and monitor stock.

Every department has a nominated person, who is responsible for ensuring admin is up-to-date, including raising purchase orders (PO) and updating ThermoFisher and Promega systems.

Researchers select the items they want, scan and take their items back to the lab.

Research staff are issued with a card, associated with the grant to be charged, which is swiped to open the supply centre door.

Furtive Ground Using magnetite and calcium – both compounds found in our brains and in excavated material from site, two clods of earth will be cast in chalk (calcium carbonate) from 35m below the site, and magnetite. Suspended through the building, the magnetite clod will become a compass, and always find magnetic north. DownstreamA collaboration with the British Library’s ‘Water Library’ and co-created with a neurologist and AI developer, Downstream is a participatory, unfolding sound work for the MRI suite, inviting people to take a journey through other people’s memories of sound, accumulating as a collective woven river of sound.
