Learning objectives

A way of explaining behaviour that includes both direct and indirect reinforcement, combining learning theory with the role of cognitive of others.

Defintion of SLT

Vicarious reinfrocement

  • The process when an observer associates themselves with a role model and wants to be like them.
  • Role model = people we identify with
  • e.g. children
  • People learn behaviours by observing and imitating others, however only if that behaviour is seen to be rewarded.

Identification

  1. Attention - learning can only take place if a model is
attended to. (COGNITIVE)
  1. Retention - how well the behaviour is remembered. (COGNITIVE)
  2. Motor reproduction- some of the behaviour that has been learnt will be imitated (BEHAVIOURAL)
  3. Motivation - the will to perform the behaviour, which is often determined by whether the behaviour was rewarded or punished. (COGNITIVE)
