S3 Physics PBL - Electricity
Every PBL (Project Based Learning) has a driving question that we need to link our learning to. This is ours for S3 Physics: "How can we help Scotland complete it's transition towards green and renewable energy?"
By equipping students with an understanding of electrical principles, digital electronics, and renewable energy technologies, we can empower the next generation of inventors and engineers to drive Scotland's transition towards a 100% renewable country
Electrons
- Electrons are subatomic particles
- They are 1 of the 3 particles that make up atoms
- Mass: 9.11x10^-31 Kilograms
- Charge: -1.6x10^19 Coulombs
Logic Gates
Logic Gates are electronic components that can be used to alter voltages and change outputs. There are seven Logic Gates that we have explored:
- AND Gates
- OR Gates
- NOT Gates
- XOR Gates
- NAND Gates (AND + NOT)
- NOR Gates (OR + NOT
- XNOR Gates (XOR + NOT)
- Resistors in Series: RT = R1 + R2 + …
- Resistors in Parallel: 1/RT = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + …
- Electrical Charge & Current: I = Qt
In the S3 physics PBL for electricity, we have learn about 3 different formulae related to electricity and electrical circuits:
Electrical Formulae
Magnets can help us generate energy by using them in motors that would help us to harness the power of renewable energies. In turbines, kinetic energy generated is converted to electrical energy from the interplay between two permanent magnets with reverse polarity.
Use of Magnets in the Energy Sector
BBC Microbits
BBC Micro Bits are small circuit boards that you can download code to for fun or educational purposes. Over the last few weeks, we have been coding these Micro Bits to detect an electrical current, and to detect power generated by a turbine. Coding is a big part of the energy sector, managing codes and algorithms that monitor energy fluctuations and energy profits
