Gender Recognition Act introduced, which allowed people to legally change gender. This meant that those dealing with gender dysphoria can acquire legal recognition as members of the sex appropriate to their gender identity

The Gender Recognition Act

The Wolfenden Committee released a report, recommending the decriminalisation of gay sex between consenting adults over 21. Ten years later, the Sexual Offences Act 1967 decriminalised homosexual acts in England and Wales, followed by Scotland adopting the legislation into Scots Law in 1980, and Northern Ireland decriminalising homosexual acts in 1982.

The Wolfenden Committee Report

Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 had banned local authorities and schools from ‘promoting homosexuality’ by discussing LGBTQ+ topics. The impacts of this were broad and fostered a deeply homophobic climate and encouraged harmful self censorship. On November 18th 2003, section 28 was repealed.

Stonewall

The London Gay Liberation Front organised the first UK Gay Pride march in London on the 1st of March 1972. The date was chosen as the closest Saturday to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots of 28 June 1969.

The World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental illness, removing it from ICD-10, WHO’s tenth revision of International Classification of Diseases. ICD-10 was officially released to and adopted by the majority of the world in 1994.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, was passed on 17 July 2013, and the first marriages of same sex couples took place on Saturday 29 March 2014. Prior to this, same sex couples could only apply for civil partnerships in the UK.
