The royal site of San Lorenzo del Escorial was built between 1563 and 1584. Is located in the city of San Lorenzo del Escorial that is about 45km to Madrid. The king Phillip II order to build the monastery as a residence to the king of Spain.It have a lot of diferents places like: monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon, library, museum, university, school, and hospital.

WHO BUILT IT?

The King Phillip II and his architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, but later other architects like Juan de Herrera, Juan de Minjares, Giovanni Battista Castello El Bergamasco y Francisco de Mora helped in the construction of the building.

The construction of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial was planned during the reign of King Philip II of Spain. The planning for the monastery and palace complex began in the late 1550s.The purpose of the building was to guarantee the glorious memory of the family of Philip II and to make up for the destruction of a church dedicated to San Lorenzo in the battle of San Quintin.

The chosen style was the renaissance one, without too much decoration and less complex. The main order is Toscano. - Armony and proportion- Simetry.- Classical order.- Use of maths and precission-Influence of the Italian art

The blueprint of the El Escorial has got the shape of an inverted grill. This caracteristical figure is a symbol of sacrifice and military triunph (due to the victory against the french tropes in Saint Quintin)

The library is one of the most important parts of the building.and one of the causes that allow it to be World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Is considered as the first nacional library, there, we can see some of the best collections of books and ancient manuscripts -The library have 40.000 books

Completion by Juan de Herrera: After Toledo's death, Juan de Herrera took over and made modofications, contributing to the Herreran style

Architectural Desing: Juan Bautista de Toledo initially designed El Escorial with a blend of Renaissance and Spanish Gothic style

How can we visit the monastery?

- In winter (october to march) from 10:00-18:00- In summer (april to september) from 10:00-19:00- Close on monday during all year.The visit is at least 2 hours and you can pay for a guide.
