A I Guerra Mundial (1914-1918) provocou uma alteração profunda na ordem mundial: - surgiram novos Estados devido ao desmembramento do Império Austro-Húngaro: - formou-se um regime de inspiração marxista (comunista) na Rússia; - Os Estados Unidos da América afirmaram-se como principal potência mundial.

Os fatores que desencadearam esta guerra resultaram do antagonismo político-militar entre dois blocos rivais, entre ambições imperialistas e movimentações nacionalistas: - a Tríplice Aliança (1882) - Alemanha, Império Austro-Húngaro e Itália; - a Tríplice Entente (1907) - Inglaterra, França e Rússia.
