Check that any charts, diagrams, etc. have been cleared from the walls

Write the following on the whiteboard (or flipchart):

  • the centre number
  • subject title, paper number
  • the actual starting and finishing time, and date of each examination.

  • Check there is a wall clock in good working order, showing the correct time and visible to all.
  • Check in advance with the exams officer which candidates, if any, have been granted access arrangements, e.g. 25% extra time, supervised rest breaks.

  • Identify the fire evacuation point and procedure for the exam venue
  • Explain this to the students before the exam gets underway
  • Store personal belongings away from desks and keep gangways clear

Seat learners according to the seating plan contained within the exam registration form. Desks should be:

  • a minimum of 1.25m apart
  • facing forwards where at all possible
  • level and stable

  • One invigilator should position themselves to the front of the room and one at the back (where possible)
  • A clear view of all candidates should be maintained from both vantage points throughout the exam

Ensure the room is well lit and ventilated and adjustments can be made as needed.
