THe Who of Learning

Start

A modular framework development training program focusing on digital upskilling is aimed at Health Care Support Workers. Two learner personas were created using the DLI framework, based on a Big Education Conversation and Think Digital survey conducted by the Chief Nursing Information Officer and initial online profile investigation of HCSWs.

Next

To increase the effectiveness of instruction, individuals should focus on learner personas to determine the most crucial activities, materials, and learning objectives that draw in the intended audience. The analysis of the gathered data creates a learner persona that indicates the general preferences of the target audience, which consists of at least two different profiles. These factors will be considered when designing the training program:

  • There is some preference for face to face, although staff are not always able to be released from their duties so a blended approach is best
  • They do not like the current system so modules would need to be accessed in a different format - using an LMS that is more easily navigated.
  • Different career aspirations, different pathways need to be provided - I have designed a set of different routes from basic skills to more advanced digital skills for them to choose
  • Like to learn in small groups where questions can be ask - a virtual tutor or chatbot for online learning would be available
  • There will be a variety of starting points due to the large range of digital abilities - after the initial introduction module they would be able to choose their starting module based on the results of the self assessment.
  • Digital preferences include:
  • > Video guides> Forums>Microlearning or bitesize course>Social Learning assignments

The Why of Learning

Start

Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) need digital skills to access and navigate eLearning platforms for professional development. In today's digitally advanced world, these skills are critical for many occupations, including healthcare. Having strong digital abilities enables HCSWs to take advantage of new eLearning opportunities

Next
The Business Problem

HCSWs require digital upskilling due to their low engagement with eLearning and infrequent access to emails. There is a diverse spectrum of learners from all age groups, with the largest group falling between 31 and 35;the learners have a range of digital skills across a variety of tasks. The National Health Service (NHS) aims to increase overall digital literacy and launch new or expand existing digital learning programmes.

Next
The Business Problem

Recent research showed that 45% of providers expressed concer that care staff lacked digital skills (Dr. Margaret Blake, November 2021)

Learning Outcomes and Learning Gap
Next

The learning outcomes are designed to equip the individuals with the skills they need in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, such as basic computer skills including accessing files, emails and navigating the internet to those more advanced digital skills that will enable them to progress in their career such as data analysis. I have used SMART and linked to Blooms Taxonomy, taking a bottom up approach

Learning Outcomes

State the importance of basic digital skills in the workplace. Recognise and develop foundational digital competencies Understand and apply digital security practices Implement collaboration skills in a digital environment Demonstrate competance in digital communication platforms Analyse and interpret data to inform data driven decision makingDesign, implement and troubleshoot software solutions.

The WHat of Learning

Start

Importance of Digitial Skills

After completing the intial introduction module, there are 3 diffferent pathways that act as guidence for different levels of skillsets. Learners are able opt into modules from different pathways depending on skills needed. The skills needed would be assessed through the digital skills assessment as part of the intro module This follows the core and spoke model with the importance of digital skills being the central theme and the optional modules enabling the learners with skills to reinforce the main theme.

Modular Framework

The How of Learning

Start

To increase engagement in learning, a hybrid approach is suggested, incorporating small group discussions in person and asynchronous learning. Asynchronous learning provides flexibility, enabling learners to pursue their own schedule or path, while a course tutor is available for the initial module. More advanced modules have 2 weeks to finish, while basic modules have a week, but learners can move at their own pace. Formats that would be used: > Video guides > Forums >Microlearning or bitesize course >Social Learning assignments Forums would be set up for discussions on the content or project based assignments in which they can share ideas with their peers at different time points. Videos and microlearning enable them to work through it at their own pace

Conclusions

Programme analysis and scoping

After analysing the data collected from the Big Education conversation and Think Digital Survey, this gave me a good insight into the learning preferences, typical learner needs and barriers. Creating the learner personas enabled me to go onto develop the modular framework and learning outcomes taking everything into consideration to engage the learners. The development of learner personas has helped to develop the training around the learner rather than focusing on the content and expecting the learner to adapt.

Blooms Taxonomy

Using Blooms Taxonomy is necessary to create activitues that meet the learners needs. The different pathways are based around Blooms Taxonomy from lower order thinking skills to higher order thinking skills, so those in the basics pathway are based around the LOTS, for example state the importance of basic digital skills in the work place they would need to remember how to use basic computer functions and accessing emails, understand the concept of cyber security

SMART

For each of the learning outcomes I made them specific linking it to a variety of skills such as digital compenticies or data analysis. Each skill is measrurable as they would be able apply these in their job role, for example an increase uptake in accessing emails or ability to anaylse data. There are a variety of skill levels that are achievable for different learners, all of which are relevent to their current job roles or future career. The time frame is set as as a week per module or 2 weeks for more advanced module
