A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved in this year's SSRC! We hope you have a great day immersing yourself in the presentations, workshops and exhibition space. We look forward to meeting you and celebrating the SSRC24 at the networking event from 17:00-18:15 in Parkinson Court.
Interdisciplinary perspectives, collective action Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of sustainability, all student contributions address one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with particular focus on these six themes: - Climate Resilience and Adaptation
- Net Zero Carbon
- Justice, Equality, and Inclusivity
- Protection of Nature and Biodiversity
- Education for Sustainable Development
- Innovation, Industry and Infrastructure
These themes build on the Yorkshire and Humberside Climate Commission’s Climate Action Plan. Regional collaboration is vital to the YHCC Climate Action Plan, and core to the Supporting a Net Zero City commitments of the University of Leeds Climate Plan.
A warm welcome to all delegates attending the eighth annual Student Sustainability Research Conference 2024 (SSRC24) here at the University of Leeds! Collaboration for changeDelivered collaboratively with the twelve member institutions of Yorkshire Universities, the SSRC24 offers students across all levels and disciplines the opportunity to be inspired, share their sustainability related research and learn from their student peers across the region. This year, we have partnered with the London Student Sustainability Conference to give three students from each region the opportunity to present at both conferences. We are excited to celebrate the diverse, fascinating and crucial student sustainability research from fourteen higher education institutions across the country.

Watts Next? The future of anode materials for Na-Ion batteries. Melisha Barboza, University of Sheffield.
Currently studying in my final year of my undergraduate in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield. I was fortunate to undertake a research placement with the Sustainable Oxide Processing Group (ran by Rebecca Boston) where I researched how the electrochemical performance of potential anode materials for Na-Ion batteries was affected by changed conditions.
I'm a final year PhD student in the field of material science. Previously, I worked in the fashion industry as a designer where I became aware of the challenges faced by organisations to produce sustainable products. I also work as a student sustainability architect on the sustainable labs programme.
Using Infrared Spectroscopy to Develop Sustainable Test Methods for Use in Chemical Quality Control. Hollie Dodds, University of Leeds.
4th year MChem Medicinal Chemistry student at the University of Leeds. Experience in sustainable analytical chemistry through a placement year at Croda, which is where I carried out my research project.
Facilitator: Marina Tapley, Yorkshire Universities
The interactive workshop will explore the Climate Venn Diagram as a method of environmental education and communication. Participants will engage and understand their form of climate action whilst collaborating to produce a Climate Venn collage.
Workshop: The Future of Education and Communication for Climate Action.
Francesca File, University of York.
The exhibition will feature installations curated by students from various universities including:
- 16 Days of Action Campaign against Gender Based Violence for Women's Health Matters Leeds. Ellie Carpenter, Georgina Fish, Liora Moser, Lydia Taylor, Mateusz Szczurek, Zsofia Puikovity, Leeds Arts University,
- Circular (Home) Economics: Domestic Textile Constructions from Sustainable Sources. Monica Stenzel, University of Leeds.

Hazel Mooney
University of Leeds
Hazel Mooney is a PhD researcher in the Institute of Climate and Atmospheric Science at the University of Leeds. Her work explores trees and forests in several ways, from examining forest interactions with the atmosphere in her PhD, to the management of tree pests and disease in her policy internship, and outdoor activities with volunteer groups. Hazel was recently awarded the student Sustainability Champion Green Gown Award for her work encouraging young people to take action for trees.
Session Chair: SJ Cooper-Knock, University of Sheffield
The Impact of Pollution
Plastic pollution: Can artificial weathering help us to understand the chemistry of degradation and its environmental impact? Pauline de Bigault de Cazanove, Queen Mary University.
Simulating the Atmosphere in a Chamber. Danny McConnell, University of Leeds.
I am a second year PhD student studying reactions of organic compounds in the atmosphere. Using the HIRAC chamber, I control the physical and chemical environment that the organic compound is in to obtain information on its atmospheric lifetime and reaction products. These have important implications on climate and health.
Driven by a keen interest for chemistry, Pauline finished her chemical engineering studies in France in 2019. Deeply passionate about marine wildlife, Pauline quickly became preoccupied by the environmental challenges the ocean is facing today. Eager to contribute, she committed in a long-term research project to address one of the major environmental issues of this century: the plastic pollution.
Ecotoxicological Effects of Chronic Paracetamol Concentration to Seed Germination of Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.). Aimaan Ariff, University of Leeds.
Call me Aimaan, international student from Malaysia, majoring Chemical Engineering in University of Leeds. My research encompasses critical ideas on negative impacts of pharmaceutical pollution to crop which is seen as a threat to agricultural industry.
Jamie Crummie

Arts-based Approaches to Sustainability in Education
The Role of Participatory Art Interventions in Sustainability and Climate Change Education. Sarah Foster, University of York.
Using Orr’s ‘Heads, Hearts and Hands’ model with an emphasis on the use of visual storytelling, is the key to successful climate education. Safiya Hussain and Freya James, University of York.
Our project focusses on environmental education, using Orr’s ‘Heads, Hearts and Hands’ model for evaluating visual storytelling to inspire children to be more sustainably conscious, addressing the UN sustainable development goal of quality education.
What if art could save the planet? Through participatory art interventions, Sarah’s research focuses on the role of the arts in sustainability and climate change education. With a York-based focus, do these interventions help students gain new knowledge as well as give them voice and autonomy for future environmental decisions?
Using music to make green finance research and education more accessible and engaging for enhanced climate action. Rane Lucido. University of Leeds.
A geographer passionate about developing arts-based approaches to sustainability education and communication. Particularly interested in using the arts and music to communicate the importance of fairer green finance. Also a self-taught musician interested in writing sustainability research-backed music for climate action.
Facilitator: Naomi Holmes, University of York.
In this workshop, participants will play a group-based role-playing game that deals with sensemaking of climate actions. The play session will be followed by a debrief and discussion.
