What Is an Argument?

What Is Reasoning?

Reasoning, on the other hand, is the process of using new or existing information to make a decision based on logic (a particular way of thinking based on what we think is good judgment). When faced with a problem, you’ll weigh up the pros and cons before reaching a decision. Reasoning is crucial in critical thinking because it helps individuals evaluate arguments, analyse information, and make informed decisions.

When we hear the word ‘argument’, we immediately think of a disagreement between two or more people. Whilst that is correct, an argument in the context of critical thinking can also mean putting forward a clear and concise point of view. When you argue something, you usually begin by stating something and then supporting that statement with evidence. The aim of an argument is to persuade or convince others of the validity of the conclusion.
