The present participle is always formed by adding -ing to verbs, e.g. speaking.

* The present participle is used to make the present and past continuous with the verb ‘be’. For example: She was reading at 11 a.m. and she’s still reading! * can be used as adjectives. For example: Speaking games are fun. * In order to shorten an active clause attached to another clause sharing the same subject.

The past participle is formed by adding -ed to regular verbs, e.g. interested. However, many verbs are irregular, e.g. spoken, written, etc.

FIND PAST PARTICIPLES

1. Make a list of 3 present participles, e.g. doing, writing, cooking. 2. Make a list of 3 participle phrases, e.g. playing football, eating dinner, buying T-shirts. 3. Swap lists with your partner. Take it in turns to make 6 sentences using your partner’s list. For example: I don’t like playing football. Eating dinner is my favourite part of the day.
