  • Your Security settings are one of the best ways to Protect yourself from unwanted content and contact online. Most default settings are set to Public and are accessible to anyone on the Internet.
  • This means that anything you post, can be viewed by anyone else and that they can comment on any posts you make.

  • Your privacy is important and you should remember that what you share online will be there forever.
  • Anything you send to others can be screen shot, saved or downloaded even if you think you have deleted it.

Are the people online who you think they are? It’s easy to create a ‘Fake’ profile, copy someone else's picture and information to get close to their friends. If you get a new friend request. Speak to the person directly and see if its them.

Limit your ‘friends’ list to people you know and trust.

Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat and other social media platforms all have Privacy settings so only people on your friends list can see your posts or comment on them.

The use of 2 Factor / Multi factor Authentication is an important tool for protecting your own accounts from compromise.

Do you use 2FA?

  • Online bullying and Harassment can be reported to Merseyside Police online, via 101 or by calling 999 in an emergency.
  • If the offence includes any sort of Cyber Crime then it should also be reported to Action Fraud.

HOW CAN I REPORT ONLINE ISSUES?

  • Every time something is posted online it leaves a digital signature. Police can request data from the Social Media Account, Email provider or Messenger provider for the IP Address of the poster.
  • The IP Address can then lead to the registered subscriber and assist in identifying a suspect.
  • The police can also request that a Profile is suspended if it is posting inappropriate content or Breaching Community Guidelines.
