WHAT IS 'ARAB' AND HOW MANY ARAB COUNTRIES ARE THERE?

Arabs are people who speak Arabic and who come from the Middle East and parts of North AfricaThere are currently 22 arab countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Geography

The Arabian Peninsula is a desert environment surrounded by saltwater bodies. The Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea border the peninsula on three sidesPeople often refer to this area as 'MENA' which stands for Middle East (&) North Africa which is where most/all of the arab countries are located.

HISTORY

  • The people of pre-Islamic Arabia were predominantly polytheistic. Christians were concentrated in the south of the peninsula in modern-day Yemen, with small groups as well as monks and hermits living in the desert. Jewish communities too lived in Arabia and were mostly situated in villages and cities.

  • Arabs are first mentioned in Biblical and Assyrian texts of the 9th to 5th centuries BC where they inhabited parts of present-day Syria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

What is the percentage of different religions within the arab community?

The Druze are not connected with any of the great monotheistic faiths, but like the Baha'i, they believe that the prophets of Judaism, Christianity and Islam truly were messengers from God. The difference is that the Druze believe in reincarnation and think that all the prophets were one and the same person.

Religion data

Currently, around 93% of Arabs are Muslims, while the rest are mainly Arab Christians( 5%), as well as Arab groups of Druze and Baháʼís( 2%).
