scandals & damaged image
Intersectionality: - lots of different parts of his whole identity - race, gender, class, experiences, etc - highest grossing African American artists of all time
Black Nationalist: - Hip Hop lyrics about black culture - his identity translates as he's a strong African American influence (Dyson, 2004)
Celebrity Culture: - becoming more famous = more into culture - friends with other rappers - media = good/bad?
Cool Masculinity: - gender makes him 'cooler' - black pop/hip hop culture - resiliently noisy = cool - rap songs are misogynistic, brutal - encouraged raps about drugs, crime, sex (Mcguigan, 2010)
Consumer Culture: - marketed as a 'old school' artist - songs are about love, sex, partying, etc - fan base is very diverse
thematic connections
Although he began his journey as a 'cool' and 'popular artist, with mass potential to be a 'role model' to young men or men of colour.
His music remains popular to this day, but him as an artist has too much controversy attached to him, showing how his identity has been tainted.
His reputation has been forever changed by his felonies, behaviour and scandals. He will never be looked at the way he once was.
his identity: then vs now?
This concludes the investigation of Chris Brown's identity as it has developed over time.
Postmodernists would say: - his identity is fragmented due to his life experiences (Elliott, 2020) - even as he rebuilds his image, it will never be as it was - hyperreality - line between who he is and who media says he is has been blurred (Rojek, 1993) - mix of genres is seen as a 'postmodern' collage as it challenges traditional genre boundaries - emphasis on seperating artist from art - music is still popular and 'cool' even though he is not; he is still benefitting
