In a sunny place called Makkah, there lived a kind man called Muhammad. He loved to sit and remember God in a quiet cave on the side of a mountain called Mount Hira.The people of Makkah worshipped idols. But Muhammad was different. He believed in one God, Allah.

One day, during a visit to the cave, he had an unexpected encounter with the shining angel called Jibril. Jibril had come with a message from Allah.

“Read,” Angel Jibril said gently. Muhammad looked up, surprised. “But I can’t read,” he responded. Angel Jibril gave the man a comforting hug and softly repeated, “Read!” But Muhammad could not read. And then for a third time, Angel Jibril said, “Read!”

Miraculously, the words of Allah were in Muhammad’s heart. He repeated them and memorised them. These words were revelations from Allah.

‘Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a pieceof thick coagulated blood).Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not.’ 96:1-5

Muhammad was very frightened. He ran home and, trembling all over, told his wife Khadijah what had happened.

Khadijah believed all that Muhammad had told her. She went and told her cousin Waraqa, who was a wise and clever Christian.Waraqa warned Khadijah that while Muhammad would have a great message for the world, he had to be patient because not many people would listen to him.

Some people in the community did not listen to Muhammad. The merchants were furious. They thought Muhammad was stirring up trouble and would anger their gods.

The Angel Jibril often came to Muhammad after that day, to teach Muhammad Allah’s message for the world. It took 23 years for the angel to give Muhammad the whole message.

Later, Muhammad shared the message to some of his followers, including Abu Bakr, who supported him. Abu Bakr was Muhammad’s beloved and best friend. It was Abu Bakr and other companions of Muhammad who later helped write the message of Allah down in Arabic in the order that Allah wanted.
