Begin designing: sketch a range of ideas. Test out different materials. Experiment with shape, size and colour. Try things out in 2D and 3D to see what works for you.

Think about your production: is it a classic retelling or something unique? Who is your audience? Do they already know the characters? Will there be lots of dance and movement involved?

Consider the character: do they change within the show? Are they happy/sad/angry? What colours show how they feel? How do they relate to the set/other characters?

The Queen of Hearts

As (usually) the villain of the show, the Queen needs to seem unlikeable but is also often presented as glamourous. She always wears red, with a heart motif.

The Mad Hatter is famous for his mismatched and eccentric outfits. He should stand out on stage and be able to move around. The Mad Hatter always wears a hat!

The White Rabbit is always late, so his costume usually centres around a pocket-watch. He famously wears a waistcoat, or a playing card costume, and has to look obviously like a rabbit when played by a human.

Alice is the protagonist of the show, so her costume is usually used to make the other characters seem stranger. She goes through a journey, both physical and emotional, throughout the story, so her clothes could reflect this by changing to blend in with the Wonderland style. Try to do something unique with this one!
