AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY IN BEXAR - OWNERSHIP AND WEALTH

- BEXAR POPULATION -

According to a census in 1777, there was only 15 enslaved africans in a population of 2,060 people. Despite their small numbers, slave owners were considerably wealthy and significant influence during this era.

- OCCUPATIONAL DATA-

In Bexar County, cattle ranching was dominating compared to the cotton business. Majority of slaveholders were rancher's/farmers and their wealth was sustained by enslaved persons who worked on their land.

- WEALTH VALUE OVER TIME -

In 1861 a French pastor named Claude M. Dubius paid $1,200 for a 38 year old woman whom was to become his slave. Though it may not seem like a lot, $1,200 in 1861 is roughly $30,000 in 2023. Truely showing how wealthy the slaveholders actually were.

16.0% OF SLAVEHOLDERS

- LABOR DISTRIBUTION -
