My work: For the Ends of Being and Ideal Grace. Also a part of a mini workshop.

Wellness Center: “We are our own healers. We are our own medicine”Application to exhibit Artwork.

As a Mexican-American, my intricate woven beadwork reflects a constant repetition that transports me to a mental space where I envision critical fabulations about my ancestors' customs. Beyond historical accounts, the symbols, patterns, and colors chosen for each piece convey an encrypted intimacy, offering a unique connection to cultural heritage.

Kameelah Janan Rasheed/Unsewn Time at AIC

Jacolby Satterwhite/Spirits Roaming on the Earth/Reifying Desire

Tabita Rezaire/Conversations at the Edge 2019/Premium Connect

For Unsewn Time, Rasheed worked with mark making, rubbing, folding, chemical reactions, and other material explorations to consider how meaning is conveyed in forms that are created through intimate rituals and improvisational processes. Rasheed painted and collaged directly on light-sensitive photographic paper to create two large-scale works for the exhibition. She played with the quantity, order, and duration of applying photographic developer and fixer, as well as the introduction of slivers of light.

Satterwhite's Reifying Desire series represents a collaboration between the artist and his mother by way of his repurposing of her text and drawings, many intended as proposed home shopping network products. The drawings are rendered into 3D virtual space, forming the backbone of linked metanarratives that touch upon personal history, pop culture, utopia, and queering the ordinary. The artist himself shares these virtual environments, often green-screened in through dance performance.

After contributing their patterns to the loom, students will write down what was most challenging, most satisfying or most surprising. Pass out the handouts :)

Reflection Piece :

Students will engage in a guided meditation where they will be led to create from a space of intuition rather than logic. Students will use what they saw in their guided imagery to add to a woven beadwork pattern.

Process:

Read the Prompt to the class for the guided imagery activity

Guided Imagery Exercise

It is meant to protect my throat chakra from indulging in hateful speech, therefore eliminating the opportunity for self induced harm. After all, one only has control over one's own actions and harboring negative feelings will not hurt anyone but oneself. Purple is used as a representation of royalty and divinity, after all, how ever anyone speaks is what they become, and the color purple reminds me of what I want to manifest. The mirroring effect of the glass beads reminds me that I should not think of myself as too different from everyone else. Guided Imagery helped with color choice and design, specifically for the bracelet. Reifying desire into an object happens by creating the piece of jewelry for a specific function. Setting intentions for this "armor" happens as a consequence of engaging with intuitive art making strategies such as guided imagery, journaling, and meditating.

These colors are used for evil eye pendants (For protection from evil forces). There's a similar intent with this bracelet. The white arrows symbolize being proactive rather than just seeking protection. Surely there is a way to defend oneself in a way that is peaceful. The wearer of this bracelet is meant to experience the confidence in knowing that nothing they say in their defense will be used against them. Those colors are also the colors of the King and Queen of Swords in the Tarot. The pair mostly symbolize highly intelligent forces, and are master communicators.
