Climate Change in Seattle WA

How is Climate Change effecting the Region?

  • The pacific north west region of the United States is known for it slush emerald green forests and beautiful mountains as well as cold weather and glaciers.
  • Climate change is melting these glaciers and dumping millions of gallons of water into the small waterways and sounds that flow into many of these coastal cities rising water and threatening the infrastructure many of these cities rest on.
  • The new acidity in these sounds and channles have killed off many of the species of fish that these cities rely on, fisheries have found less and less fish over the past 50 years due to new chemicals being introduced into the Puget sound.

Impact of Climate change in Seattle

  • Due to the influx of pollution and waste into the waterways around Seattle many of the natural resources have begun to die off or become harmful to use or ingest.
  • As majority of the city is along the coast and in an area near glaciers and ice caps, rising waters threaten the infrastructure which most of the city relies on
  • As the city is built on a slope and has engineered many of their transportation methods and public water services to fit this need, rising waters with harmful toxins threatens the longevity of the city and surrounding area.

Whats being done??

  • Many government funded companies are using their budget to clean the waterways of medical toxic waste and other acids that are dumped into the salty waters every day.
  • Since Seattle is a very visited location, many of these organizations are using tourism to their advantage as it provides another source of income to assist in keeping seattle a beautiful city, keeping the Puget sound clean bringing fish and wildlife back, and fighting back air pollution which is killing off the trees and melting the local glaciers and snow capped mountains.
  • Companies like "Dark Sky" are fighting light pollution in seattle by engineering better public transporation which will limit the amount of stray light particles being added to the atmosphere.

How does this Impact the globe?

  • The climate change impacts from Seattle and many of the other coastal cities of the Pacific North West contribute to the global climate change crisis by emiting many greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere from fossil fuels, as well as warming the ocean with toxic materials in waterways.
  • Trash from these major cities are accumulated in the central pacific known as the Great Pacific Garbage patch which is a large island looking structure which is purely made of microplastics and garbage.

How is Light Pollution Impacting Seattle?

  • Seattle Washington is one of the most light polluted cities in the Western region of the United States
  • The city that lies on hills has many public transportation services which produce upward light particles
  • The Halo of light that is produced above Seattle can be seen from Idaho and Oregon some nights due to the closeness of many of the buildings and light producers all allowing stray particles to make their way into the sky.
  • Organizations like Dark sky which is a governemtn funded org are fighting the light pollution problem in Seattle by innovating better street lights, and transportation services.

Climate Change around the world

  • Climate change similar to Seattle happens around the world in many popular cities that are on waterways.
  • For example New york also has a toxic waste epidemic in their waterways which leads to higher temperatures, and less wildlife every year due to the acidity and toxicity in the water.
  • London England also sees polluted waterways, toxic fish, and natural issues and dead trees along the coast of pollution producing areas.
