Staff Shoutouts

Mrs. Schwarting has gone above and beyond to help our kiddo. Not only has she been in regular contact to keep us updated, she is encouraging, thoughful and kind. She's not even his advisor! Mrs. Schwarting who clearly, truely cares about the kids under her care is a wonderful example for my kids to look to as they grow and develop healthy relationships. Thank you!

Staff Shoutouts

According to all 3 of my kids that have had/or has now Ms. Geurts...she is the most fair teacher they have had. She equally rewards anyone that does a good job and puts in the effort. She is also very encouraging to those that struggle. My son LOVES Ms. Geurts because she challenged him and let's him excel even if he is already familiar with the subject matter.

  • Use literature as the basis for engineering design challenges by drawing information from the text to identify engineering problems
  • Consider characters as clients and use details from the story
  • Novel Engineering Kits (with supplies to build projects)
  • Good cross-curricular activities, especially with Science
  • Example: We built a soundproof birdhouse; based on a problem in the story, The Baby BeeBee Bird.

"The Greeting”

  • Greeting students at the door produces a 20 percent increase in academic engagement and a 9 percent decrease in disruptive behavior.
  • How does each student feel seen?
Can you name 10 things about each of your students?
  • Very difficult, but it can definitely help foster relationships
Teacher to Teacher Relationships

Brain breaks needed every 20 mintues of screen time.

Welcoming Newcomers -"Newcomers" is a term used for students new to the country. -Ideas for helping new students to OMS feel welcome include: a welcome gift bag with important information, a welcoming crew made up of students, and a possible video made my OMS students to give a tour of the school.

Alex's Takeaways

Genially.com-Free version with loads of templates for slideshows, escape rooms, quiz games, infographics, etc. (A teacher version exists for $4.99 per month.) -It can be as easy or complex as you're comfortable with. -This is an easy way to gamify your classroom.

Empowering Learners: Culturally Responsive Teaching in Action-"Mirror instead of a window" concept: Provide opportunities for all students to see themselves/their culture in the school community. -Encourage adults to evaluate internal bias they may have in order to empower students to do the same. While uncomfortable, it is important to being culturally responsive teachers.

"Supporting Newcomers in Middle School"

  • Use common language/vocabulary with new students.
  • Have a group of students prepared to welcome new students.
  • Give all new students school swag.

"KeyNote"

  • Using gaming in your classroom at at various degrees is a great way to engage your students.
  • Such game design elements as challenges & side quests, scoring & reward systems, and story lines to drive a game are all innovative ways to add an element of gamification to your classroom.
